One of the best ways to get outdoors during the wintertime is to discover nature while you are indoors. You and your family can enjoy many activities together while you are stuck indoors because of the cold. The discovery of nature doesn’t need to stop just because the weather has changed. Continue reading to learn more about how you can bring the outside indoors.

Start an Inside Garden or Regrow Food

The beauty of plants is that they can grow almost anywhere, especially indoors! You can try a couple of things to get your family involved in growing and caring for plants. 

The first plants you should try to cultivate are herbs. Most herbs are sturdy and can be grown in many different environments, making them a great first plant to grow. Get a couple of pots and soil. Pick your favorite fresh herb seeds, plant and water. That’s all you need to do! Put your kids in charge of watering the plants. You can also encourage them to track the daily or weekly process of the plants by drawing images or recording the changes in a notebook. 
If you want to try something more intensive, start your outside garden inside! Certain fruits and vegetables can be sprouted inside and then moved outdoors during the spring. Start with things seeds or regrow fruits and vegetables purchased at the grocery store. Get creative with your indoor garden this winter. Get Creative with Rocks

While rocks may seem like some of the dullest objects in nature, they are actually quite interesting. There are all kinds of different stones, and some of them could be thousands of years old. Get creative with rocks this winter by collecting cool ones that catch your eye, or if you want to get invested, you can purchase a rock tumbler that washes away years of old grime. Rock collecting is a fantastic hobby that the entire family can enjoy. 

Or, if you aren’t interested in collecting rocks, you can also make them an art project! Buy some paint and brushes, and allow your kids to get creative by painting images, almost like their very own cave paintings. This summer, your kids can pick a special place to leave the rock for someone else to find.

Build a Nature Box or Sensory Stations

Sometimes bringing the outdoors inside doesn’t need to be complicated. It can be as simple as creating nature boxes and sensory stations. One of the fantastic things about nature is that it engages all of our senses. Creating nature boxes allows kids to feel, smell, see and hear nature indoors. 

You can include so many exciting things in sensory stations. Add rocks, sand, small branches, grass, leaves and dirt. Those are only a few of the options. One way to make this activity all-encompassing is to work together with your family to find the items for the nature boxes. 

Indoor Birdwatching

Did you know that you can enjoy bird watching indoors? Indiana has a wide variety of birds that stay in the winter, including our state bird, the cardinal, which you can distinguish by its beautiful red color. Put a comfortable chair in front of a window in your house and wait for the birds to come. Install a bird feeder or bird bath in front of your favorite window for quicker results. When it gets warmer outside, make sure to use our Bird Watching Passport and record which birds you spot.

Set Up an Indoor Campsite

One way to bring the outdoors inside is to camp inside! Camping inside is a fun family activity for kids and adults. Set up your tent and unroll your sleeping bags indoors. Spend the night with fire sounds on youtube and make some hot dogs and smores on the stove. 
Prepare your kids for a summer camp out by teaching them camping safety, how to build a fire, and showing them camping supply lists. For more fun inside camping information, check out this great blog!

Make Bird Feeders

One great use of your time this winter would be making bird feeders. We already talked about how you can add a bird feeder to attract more birds, but did you know you make them for cheap at home? All it takes is a trip to your local craft store and some bird seed. There are many cool ideas, like using old glassware, plastic bottles, milk cartons or fruit peels. Create a Treasure Shelf

Do your kids constantly bring you little treasures when you are outdoors? We have the perfect solution! Give them their very own treasure shelf. It gives them a place to display all the unique treasures they find outdoors like cool rocks, leaves or sticks. 

Not only can they display them for the entire family to see they can also investigate them when you are spending cold days indoors. Creating a treasure shelf is a simple way to bring the outside indoors.

Because it is wintertime and going outside to enjoy the brutal Indiana cold doesn’t sound pleasant to anyone, there are fewer events during this season. So, we have also filled this blog with additional family-friendly activities that you can enjoy indoors!

2nd Saturday Winter Art Activities

Did you know engaging in the arts can help improve your overall well-being? It’s true! Participating in the arts can decrease anxiety, increase connections, and reduce loneliness. There’s research that suggests the arts can improve cognitive function as we age too. Engaging in the arts is just overall good for you! So, when should we begin to engage with the arts to enjoy the benefits? As early as possible. We are so lucky to have a community arts center that offers art programming for our local youth. 

Starting in August through the Winter, the Blackford County Arts Center will be hosting Second Saturday Art Activities. On the second Saturday of each month, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., all kindergarten through sixth grade-aged kids can enjoy making art. Stay up to date on everything happening at the Blackford County Arts Center by joining their Facebook group.

Christmas Parade Event

Now that it’s winter, we can look forward to one of our favorite events of the entire year, which is the Christmas Parade. Nothing puts you into the Christmas mood like looking at all the lights around town. The parade is a great family event that anyone can enjoy. 

The parade will take place this year on December 23 at 5:00 p.m. Make sure to get your photo with Santa Claus and then join the lineup of cars to check out the beautiful Christmas lights all over Hartford City. Make sure to tune your radio to WPGW 100.9 to listen to sing along with some Christmas songs. Make this year one to remember by attending each of these winter events in Blackford County.

Family-Friendly Holiday Activities

There is so much to do around the holidays, but make sure to carve out some time for fun holiday activities that the whole family can enjoy. There are so many fun activities that your family can make a tradition!

Bringing the Outside Indoors

We know going outside during the wintertime is no fun unless you build snowmen and sled down a hill. But even with a few outdoor activities, it is much harder to get outdoors during the cold season, which is why we suggest bringing the outside indoors!

There is so much to discover outdoors, but that doesn’t mean the discovery needs to stop just because you are inside. A couple of ways that you can bring the outdoors inside are:

• Start an indoor garden – plant some herbs and winter veggies in small pots around your home.
• Bring insects inside – try out an ant or worm farm for the winter.
• Create a nature treasure self – designate a self where everyone can collect unique items they found outdoors.
• Build nature boxes – fill a small container with nature items that kids can closely examine.
• Try indoor bird watching – enjoy some time looking out your windows for some of Indiana’s beautiful winter birds.
• Create a pinecone bird feeder – make a pinecone feeder with only items that you found outdoors.

Keep Our Parks Clean

Conservation of our parks is vital to keep them beautiful for decades to come. We need your help! The Hartford City Parks Department is tasked with keeping the parks as clean as possible. What a big job! 

While littering may seem like a small thing, it is harmful to the environment. It is essential that you leave the parks cleaner than you found them. This means making sure that you leave nothing, and if you see something that isn’t natural to the environment pick it up. That one small act of kindness will keep our parks clean and beautiful. 

Make Everyday Earth Day

Cleanliness is one of the things that you can do to keep Blackford County beautiful. You can also:

• Stay on the Trails – Stay on the path so you don’t disrupt the natural landscape and wildlife. 
• Take Only Photos – We know that nature is beautiful and it is tempting to take souvenirs, but leave everything the way you found it. Try not to deprive the wildlife of anything they may need. 
• Be Aware of Noise – One great part of nature is that it is mostly quiet. In respect of animals and visitors around you, try to avoid things like playing loud music or shouting.

Adopt A Park

Do you know what would be better than just picking up after yourself? Ensuring that not just your space but the entire park is clean! While Blackford County doesn’t have an official Adopt-A-Park program, you can unofficially adopt a park. 

Remember to speak with Hartford City Park’s Department to discuss where clean-up may be the most needed. Pick your favorite park in Blackford County, and spend a couple of days a month cleaning up. Remember to wear gloves and bring a couple of trash bags! 

Encourage Community Clean Ups

While a one-person cleaning crew can make a difference, you can also invite your family, friends and coworkers to help keep Blackford County beautiful. One way to make a significant difference is to plan a group clean-up event. Some great days you can consider are National Clean-Up Day and Earth Day.  

Spend Time In The Parks

While keeping Blackford County beautiful is essential, that doesn’t mean that you should avoid the parks to keep them clean. Every greenspace in Blackford County is for residents to visit and enjoy. Because getting outdoors is good for your mental and physical health!

According to the U.S. Forest Service, “Being outside in greenspaces supports an active and healthy lifestyle, which has shown to increase life expectancy, improve sleep quality and reduce cancer risk.” 

Not only does it improve your life, but it also improves the quality of your life. Being outdoors can reduce depression and anxiety. From the same U.S. Forest Service articles, studies also show that “being in nature can restore and strengthen our mental capacities, increasing focus and attention.”

Montpelier Jamboree

Join us at the Montpelier Jamboree! The Jamboree will be September 1, 2, 3 and 4 right here in Blackford County.

There will be a variety of vendors, from delicious food to unique antiques. You can also enjoy carnival rides and concerts. On September 4, 2022, you can get tickets to see Adelitas Way in concert. Rendezvous On The Reserve

If you are interested in the history of the early residents of Indiana, you can get a living history experience. Live like a settler from the 1800s at the historic Blackford County Myaamia Reserve. Secure your campsite for Rendezvous On The Reserve on September 16-18, 2022. Enjoy some unique competitions like archery, skillet toss, and kids games. Civil War Days

Fall in Blackford County is full of events that remind us of our history. Not only can you experience history on the Godfroy Reserve, but you can also be a part of the largest Civil War reenactment in Indiana. Civil War Days will be held from September 30 to October 2, 2022.

Visit the vendors who are selling their goods to soldiers and civilians alike—walk through camps and converse with the presenters. There will be both modern day and historically appropriate foods available for purchase. Visit the blacksmiths, weavers, spinners, rug makers, refugees, the medicine show, etc. Most importantly, do not forget to come out and see Indiana’s Largest Artillery Night firing event. 4-H Fall Festival

As the days are getting colder, it is important to get outdoors and enjoy the year’s final events. Head out to the Blackford County 4-H Fairgrounds for some spooky fun. Make sure your family comes dressed in their best Halloween costumes. 

Start by trunk or treating and visiting the booths of local organizations and businesses. Warm up inside and enjoy a pumpkin painting contest, costume contest, fun games and booths sponsored by 4-H clubs and volunteers. The 4-H Fall Festival will be on October 22, 2022. Trunk Or Treat

We have another Halloween activity lined up on our list of fall events in Blackford County. One thing that Blackford County does not lack is Halloween celebrations! Along with the 4-H Fall Festival, the Hartford City Arts Council will be hosting Trunk or Treat at Weiler Plaza on October 28. Break out your Halloween costume one last time for another night of trick or treating!

What’s Indiana known for? Basketball of course! Grab your sneakers, basketball, and a few friends, then head out for a pick-up game. Have grandchildren? The pedicab is an ideal place to catch up on life from a 3-year-old’s perspective. Pedicabs are perfect for the young and old, and every age in between. 3. Who Doesn’t Love Breadsticks

This is one of our favorite summer activities in Blackford County! Are you starving after a long day of working outside? Fill your craving for some carbs with breadsticks and cheese at the Little League Complex. Fun fact, Indiana has a reputation for eating breadsticks with nacho cheese, but that’s not a thing in our border state Ohio. Weird but true. In Indiana, if we have breadsticks, we want them with nacho cheese! Come for the breadsticks and stay for a baseball game. Cutting out carbs or gluten? Don’t worry. They have other menu options.

4. Tiptoe Through the Wildflowers

Get it? Our title is a play on Tiptoe Through The Tulips by Tiny Tim. Well, some of us may be old enough to remember that song. You know what? Forget tulips. Wildflowers are where it’s at, and summer is the right time to tiptoe through Wilderness Park Prairie!

Do you enjoy a relaxed nature walk? Or are you a bird-watching buff? Or are you possibly a plant lover? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you need to visit Wilderness Park Prairie Restoration. Just kidding, stay on the path but still check out the flowers! Take a short walk or pack a lunch and stay for a couple of hours. The beauty of the park in the summer never disappoints. 5. Brown Bag Lunch

Do you remember your first elementary school field trip? One of the most exciting parts of the day was opening our special packed brown bag lunch! Recreate the experience by enjoying lunch with friends at the Wyler Park picnic tables. A picnic in Wyler Park could also be a cheap family-friendly activity. Take this opportunity to spend time with your children or those around you during the parade by playing eye spy on your favorite 4-H parade horse.

8. Walk 10,000 Steps

If you have a job where you sit all day, it can be hard to get in the recommended 10,000 steps. Sometimes we need extra encouragement to get those steps in. Well, we have a challenge for you this year! Do you think you are up for the challenge? Getting outdoors doesn’t always involve going to a park or visiting a nature reserve. Instead, go shopping! Grab a few of your closest friends and visit every booth at the Arts Place Summerfest. The goal is to walk 10,000 steps for the day. Visit all the local artisans and say hello to people you know. Heritage Days

Looking for a fun family event? Then you need to mark the Heritage Days Festival down on your calendar. Heritage Days is a festival that we have been celebrating for more than 40-years, it’s an event you don’t want to miss!

This year we will be celebrating their 42nd Heritage Days Festival! The festival will be from May 18-21. Bring your family to enjoy the carnival, live music, food and craft vendors, and the queen contest. Just head to Main Street in Hartford City to enjoy all of the activities.

Movies and Concerts in the Park

Are you a movie buff or a concert lover? Then Weiler Plaza has an event for you this summer! Enjoy incredible concerts at Weiler Plaza on the following dates June 4, 18, and July 9, 23. Enjoy the live music while you spend time with friends and family. If you are interested in more family-friendly events, there also will be movie showings at Weiler Plaza on the second Friday in June, July, and August. Get outdoors and enjoy some movie time with the entire family.

Saturday in the Park

Why do most of us celebrate the 4th of July? To honor our independence and freedom as Americans established on July 4th, 1776. It’s a day dedicated to fireworks, fun, friends, and family. After everything we as a country, have been through the last few years, it’s time to celebrate and appreciate this country, state, and county that we call home.

So, mark your calendar for this can’t miss event! This annual celebration is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with friends and family. On July 2, make your way to Sigma Phi Gamma Park for all-day 4th of July activities.

4-H Fair

What was one of the signs we were officially a ‘big kid’? When we were old enough to walk the fairgrounds without parents. Was this the same for you? For us, it meant spending hours riding the carnival rides and devouring all the deep-fried food our bellies could handle. July is everyone in Blackford County’s favorite time of the year, not only because of the July 4^th celebrations but because that means it’s time for the 4-H Fair.

4-Hers work all year long for this one week to show off their dogs, cows, rabbits, pigs, projects, and more. Come for the fabulous food but stay to watch the kids show their animals. There is something for everyone! Truck pulls, food, and more. We’ve got it all at the Blackford County 4-H Fair. Get outdoors and head to the fairgrounds to support our 4-Hers the week of July 9th through the 16th. Please check back to this page for updates on the fair!

Fun Things To Do at Events

There is so much to do at each of these summer events in Blackford County, but we have a couple of activities that can make them even more fun!

1. Eye spy your favorite horse at the 4-H Day parade
2. Calories don’t count during 4-H week, so make sure to bite down on an elephant ear

Zuber tells about her evolution from her junior high years and her mother’s death to her determination to do better for herself in school. She became involved with Student Council as a freshman and then was elected a district representative for the Indiana Association of Student Councils. She wants to help students have better lives and that goal has led to her career choice in teaching.

The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship provides for full tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 per year for required books and equipment for four years of undergraduate study on a full-time basis. The scholarship must be used for a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university.

Blackford County’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholar is chosen on the basis of a student’s academic record, volunteerism and community service, extracurricular activities, financial need and personal goals as presented in a personal interview with the selection committee.

Zuber is the 41st recipient of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship in Blackford County since the start of the program in 1998.
